With the help of the Second Chances: A New Leash on Life program, Sally has found her home. |
Meet Sally. After arriving at CBHS in May of 2020 as a stray, Sally was quickly nicknamed 'Silly Sally' due to her goofy & fun-loving personality. However, at around 2-years-old, Sally was also a large, energetic, and strong dog that had absolutely no obedience training. This resulted in unruly behavior that caused her to be continually overlooked for adoption and is most likely the cause of Sally being in the care of CBHS for over nine months. We know that well-behaved dogs with appropriate training are adopted quicker and are less likely to be returned to the shelter after adoption.
Rock River Pet Resort offered Sally an extraordinary opportunity to participate in a two-week training/obedience program at a reduced fee. In order to help this long-term shelter dog, a generous donor sponsored her enrollment and Sally set off on a new adventure.
We knew right away that this could be an important ongoing partnership.
Training with Rock River Pet Resort made a world of difference for Sally. She is now obedient, respectful, easy to handle on a leash, and polite when meeting new friends. Because of the success we saw in Sally, we knew that this would be an important partnership for the shelter in the hopes that many more dogs can be given a second chance. |

CBHS & Rock River Pet Resort will select which dogs are best candidates to go through this life-changing program based on temperament at behavior.
Through Second Chances, we aim to help the shelter dogs that are overly fearful, struggle with anxiety, are excessively energetic, or have unique behavior issues. Dogs that have been at the shelter the longest will also be considered as they are often passed over for so long due to behavioral issues.
When adopting a Second Chances graduate, adopters will be welcoming a dog into their family that has received some basic obedience training and will know a variety of commands. Most importantly, it will give them the foundation needed to continue to grow into good canine citizens and companions.
Adopters will receive a one-on-one consultation session with the experts at Rock River Pet Resort to learn all of the details about the dog's training level and how to continue their training and structure at home.
With community support, Cedar Bend Humane Society spends thousands of dollars on treating sick and injured animals and spaying and neutering hundreds of cats and dogs. Until now, CBHS has never had a program that addressed training and behavior modification and has never had the resources to offer dogs with behavior challenges the help they need.
We have seen what a difference it has made for Sally. This program will help numerous dogs receive obedience training and give them a second chance at finding a loving home!
As excited as we are about this new partnership, its success will depend solely on funding.
Your donations will help the next dog like Sally that comes to us needing extra help. Future candidates will be featured on our social media sites, giving the community the opportunity to follow their daily progress and support their training.
